Healthy Dog Food For Healthy Dogs

You can have a healthier dog when you feed him homemade dog food. Following is a recipe for healthy homemade dog food and you can save money on this high quality food when you make your own.

When my dog had skin problems, we looked first at his food. The vet pointed out that commercial dog food is full of fillers that can't even be digested. Corn is one of the major fillers. I was left shaking my head over that tidbit.

Why in god's name would they put undigestibles in my dog's food? I had to find a better way and started to research. There were a few recipes out there. Chicken was another problem because of the chemicals it contains, so free range chicken only. The vet liked brown rice, healthy meat, and orange vegetables, like yams and carrots.

Ok then.

No Chicken & No Corn

If dogs cannot digest this stuff, don't put it in the food!

When I first started reading the ingredients in dog food, I was horrified, undigestible filler was the main ingredient. There was very little actual food involved. Dogs are not garbage processors. Some dogs it works for, and some dogs get sick.

So I started looking for ways to make my dog some healthy food.

This is Jackson playing with his best buddy, Pepe.

My dog guards the kitchen throughout the whole home-cooked dog food process.

Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 3 hours 45 min
Ready in: 4 hours

Swapping Out The Ingredients

Ground pork, venison,or bison can be exchanged for the ground beef.

Brown rice is healthiest, but in a pinch, white rice, or oatmeal can be added.

Sweet potatoes or yams can replace the carrots.

Broccoli, green beans, or cauliflower can replace the spinach.

Jackson loves this food. He guards it in the slow cooker, then rolls on the floor in ecstacy after he eats. This makes me feel like one hell of a cook!

My vet advised me to buy dry dog food made of healthy ingredients, such as lamb and rice, sweet potato and fish, or sweet potato and venison. He advised me to read the ingredients in commercial dog food.
